Tummy Tuck
The medical term for a tummy tuck is an abdominoplasty. The tummy tuck procedure has been significantly improved and refined over the past several years. It is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and surgically tighten underlying muscles. This results in a flatter and tighter tummy. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with a tummy tuck to blend the surrounding areas.
You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are healthy and your weight is relatively stable but have an excess amount of loose skin and fat in the lower abdomen. Typically a patient with stretch marks will require a tummy tuck rather than liposuction to achieve ideal abdominal re-contouring. A tummy tuck can be particularly beneficial to women whose skin and muscles have been stretched during pregnancy and no further pregnancies are planned. It is also very helpful for men with sagging abdominal skin and fat.
This operation is performed under general anesthesia and requires an incision from one hip to the other. Through that incision the skin and fat of the abdomen is undermined up to the navel. The navel is then cut free and the fat is then continued to be separated from the muscle up to the rib cage. Following that the muscle is tightened and then the excess skin is pulled down and removed. Finally, the navel is brought through a new incision.
A tummy tuck is performed to re-contour the entire abdomen. It is normally performed on women or men that have excess skin of their lower abdomen, loose abdominal musculature and excess fat.
